On a recent Grand Rapids trip, I stopped by Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery, a must-visit orchard voted the city’s best by locals. I arrived too early for the winery, so I explored their breakfast offerings instead. Hoping for a flavored coffee to kick things off, I found only black coffee available. Instead, I tried their cold apple cider—a first for me, as I’m used to warm cider. Wow, was it incredible! It tasted like biting into a chilled, freshly squeezed apple, with subtle cider spices and vibrant fruit flavor. Even as someone who skips apple juice, I was hooked and surprised by how much I loved it.

Next, I sampled a few pastries from their donut selection. The Apple Turnover was phenomenal—not overly sweet, with flaky pastry and tender, perfectly sweetened diced apples. No hard bits here; every bite was pure bliss. I’d highly recommend it to any visitor.

Variety of Pastries

The Cinnamon Sugar Donut came next, a fresh, dense yet light cake donut that was satisfyingly filling. However, the Cinnamon Twist fell flat, lacking freshness and flavor. I didn’t even finish it, especially after the delightful turnover and donut. My companion tried the Chocolate Donut, which was decent but not a standout. If you’re not into apple-focused pastries, it’s an okay pick, but I’d stick with the orchard’s strengths.

The atmosphere at Robinette’s is cozy, country, and patriotic, complete with a welcoming fireplace. Spanning 125 acres with 35 apple varieties, plus cherries, peaches, blackberries, nectarines, and apricots, this orchard is a gem. I didn’t grab any jams, jellies, or apple butter to go, but given the freshness of the cider and pastries, I bet they’re fantastic. If you’re in Grand Rapids with time to spare, Robinette’s is well worth the stop for a taste of local charm.
