Halls Chophouse in Greenville, SC, is a classic white linen tablecloth steakhouse featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with a stunning view of the Reedy River. The dress code is business casual, but at lunch, I noticed a more relaxed attire, including t-shirts and shorts. They serve lunch from Monday to Saturday between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, and dinner starts at 4:00 PM with live music (check their website for the schedule). The bar remains open throughout the day, perfect for enjoying a drink at any time. During lunch, you can order from any of their menus, including the bar menu.
King Street
The service was on point. As soon as I was seated, I was presented with water, menus, fresh crusty bread, and warm butter. I opted for the King Street favorite cocktail, the 434, made with house-made pineapple-infused orange vodka, shaken and served in a frosty martini glass. Not sure how frosty the glass actually was, but there were little chunks of ice in the drink which made it cold and refreshing. It isn’t as sweet as I expected, and I could definitely taste the fresh pineapple throughout the drink; however, I can’t say that I was crazy about all the pulp in the drink. I honestly didn’t finish it because a lot of the pulp had settled to the bottom of the glass and it was too “pulpy” for me. I think it would have been better if it was strained to get some of the pulp out.
Halls Prime Beef Nachos
To start, I ordered the Halls Prime Beef Nachos from the bar menu. These nachos were huge and piled high. The base was a layer of shredded cheddar cheese, topped with crispy nachos, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, fresh jalapenos, guacamole, sour cream, lime wedges, and seasoned chunks of prime rib. This was served with a side cup of queso cheese to spread over top as you please, or to just dip as you go. The meat was tender, and the guacamole was exceptional, possibly even better than what I’ve had in some Mexican restaurants. This dish is definitely shareable among 2-3 people.
Salmon Filet
For my main course, I chose the Salmon Filet from the lunch menu, accompanied by grits and broccolini. The portion was generous, with the salmon cooked to a perfect medium-well and a delightful crust on top. Though lightly seasoned, it was fresh and flavorful, especially with the bearnaise sauce. The pepper jack grits were tasty but quite thick, and the broccolini was flavorful with lemon and a nice char on the florets. I added some salt and pepper for extra taste.
For dessert, I chose to take a slice of Lemon-Blueberry Cheesecake to go. This dessert is completely gluten free. It was a lemon blueberry crumble cheesecake with a vanilla bean crust, topped with streusel and fresh blueberries. The lemon flavor definitely came through on this cheesecake, but I didn’t get a lot of blueberry flavor. It was a little on the dry side as well and think it would have been better with a blueberry compote over top and maybe some whipped cream. It is a seasonal item, so won’t be on the menu forever.
Though I didn’t try their renowned hand-selected, meticulously aged, hand-cut steaks this visit, I look forward to returning soon.
