Peach Fritter

Blackbird Bakery seemed to be a staple in Bristol when I visited, so I had to check it out! Upon entering the bakery on Piedmont, I have to say I was impressed with the selection in the case full of donuts, fritters, cakes and pies. I settled with a peach fritter, blueberry cake donut, and a coconut cream-filled donut, along with a Chai Tea Latte. Let’s start with the peach fritter… I wasn’t impressed. It was dry, dense and bready; along with lacking any flavor and definitely not any peach flavor. As a matter of fact, there were only a few chunks of peaches in the fritter, not enough to even consider it a peach fritter, at least in my opinion. I may have seen four pieces of peach throughout the whole fritter, which I didn’t even finish but broke apart trying to find bits of peach inside like a scavenger hunt.

Next, I tried the coconut cream-filled donut. This was definitely lacking as well. I had the notion that the filling would be the cream filling of a coconut pie, especially considering I asked the employee prior to ordering if this is what the filling was like and I was told yes! To my disappointment, when I bit into the center of this coconut cream-filled donut, it was just a white, fluffy filling with a few coconut flakes. It didn’t really taste like coconut and was overly sweet. At that point, I was about done with Blackbird Bakery and didn’t finish this donut either.

On to the third donut, wondering if this would be three strikes and it was out! The blueberry cake donut … oh my goodness! This thing was a homerun! I think it was the best blueberry cake donut I have ever put in my mouth. It had a little crispiness to the outer layer, but the inside was moist and delicious, with blueberry flavors. It wasn’t overly sweet and the texture was light and not overly dense. Finally, I had found something that was worth the stop!

Chai Tea Latte

As far as my Chai Tea Latte, I wasn’t overly impressed with it. I was able to drink it, but the overall spices in the latte were a little overbearing. I cannot say that I was impressed with the Blackbird Bakery overall. Maybe the overabundance of so many things to choose from got the best of me this day and I should stick with the simple and familiar donuts in the future. I would definitely be open to trying a few other options, but I think next visit I will probably just stick with the simplicity of a blueberry cake donut.
