Aretha Frankensteins, known for its cool, funky, vintage vibe and mouthwatering breakfast options, left me with mixed feelings during my recent visit. While the atmosphere and creativity are commendable, my expectations for a flavor-packed experience fell slightly short.
The moment I stepped into Aretha Frankensteins, I was greeted by a cool, funky, vintage vibe adorned with memorabilia, including vintage cereal boxes. The unique setting adds character to the place, but be prepared for a wait, and the compact space may get crowded. In fact, some guests simply waited in their cars to receive a text that their table was ready. One bit of awkwardness is having waiting guests lean on the short wall, just checking out the joint and the meals of other guests. It would have been especially awkward for guests seated in tables that were directly on that wall! On the other hand, while waiting on our table, I was able to get a peek at several options coming from the kitchen as servers passed by.
A quick peek at the options coming from the kitchen showcased pancakes that seemed out of this world, especially the Elephants Gerald, a waffle topped with ice cream. Unfortunately, as someone with gluten sensitivity, these delightful options were not on my plate this time.
Bacon & Cheese Omelet with a side of potatoes
I ordered the bacon and cheese omelet with a side of potatoes. The dish arrived sooner than expected based on how busy it was, but I found the omelet somewhat bland, lacking the expected flavors associated with “soul food.” The side of potatoes, though featuring a few jalapenos, could use an extra kick in terms of seasoning. My side of bacon was a pretty good, thicker cut with flavor. Not too limp, but not extra crispy either. I also tried a little of the apple butter on a biscuit, which was very tasty, not too sweet. The apple flavor came through, as did the spices.
While waiting for my food, I enjoyed a hot Chai Tea Latte, which was excellent and highly recommended. However, my companion’s hot Butter Pecan Latte fell short of expectations, requiring an extra shot of butter pecan syrup.
Scrambled Eggs with bacon & a side of potatoes
To add some much-needed flavor to my meal, I borrowed a side of gravy from my companion. The gravy, featuring small pieces of sausage, proved to be excellent and did wonders for both the omelet and the potatoes. If I did return for breakfast, I would definitely order something I felt would have a little more spice and/or seasoning to it, or I would order a side of gravy to go all over my eggs or omelet.
Despite the mixed experience, I remain open to giving Aretha Frankensteins another try in the future. The unique atmosphere and the potential of the menu, especially the renowned pancakes and waffles, are reasons enough for a return visit. For those seeking a breakfast adventure, this spot may still hold some undiscovered treasures.
