EAT MORE MEAT
I’m not usually a BBQ fan, but Mabel’s BBQ in Cleveland exceeded all my expectations! I enjoyed lunch so much I returned for dinner the same day. Nestled on East 4th Street, this gem is owned by Cleveland native and chef Michael Symon. The vibe is a rustic-industrial mix with outdoor seating and a bold bar and sign proclaiming, “Eat More Meat.” After dining here, I couldn’t agree more!
The menu boasts brisket by the half-pound, along with pulled pork, turkey breast, ribs, and sandwiches. Known for its brisket, Mabel’s offers it fatty or lean; I chose lean. Served cafeteria-style on a metal tray, my plate featured three generous brisket slices, rye bread, Cleveland kraut, and Tony Packo’s Pickles. Let me tell you, that first bite of brisket was pure heaven! Even the lean cut was tender, bursting with smoky flavor without being overpowering. The Cleveland kraut, less pickled than traditional kraut, retained a satisfying crunch and a tangy kick that paired perfectly with the meal. The pickles quickly became a favorite—crisp, slightly sweet, with a spicy zing that kept me reaching for more.
For drinks, I savored the Boardwalk Pink Lemonade, a delightful hard seltzer that tasted like true pink lemonade. It paired beautifully with the BBQ, and I’d love to sip it again, maybe on a porch swing. My friend chose a pineapple cider from Brown Hoist Cider Co., but it fell flat, lacking the promised pineapple punch.
